The Texas Rangers try to keep law and order in the chaotic Wild West but one county in particular is feared across the land Pecos County. That is, until Ranger Vaughn Steel rides into town, vowing revenge. Set in Texas, this is the tale of frontiersmen, ranchers, cowpokes, and outlaws -- and a few defenseless women.

Two Texas Rangers, one undercover as a reckless cowboy, the other right out in the open, drawing the fire and wrath of outlaws, have been sent to bring law to a rustler gang's town. In order to do it they risk losing the love of the women they've fallen for. These ladies are, unknowingly, daughter and niece to the rustler chief.

I love Zane Grey, but this wasn't his best outing. The obstacles weren't that great and there seemed little point in dragging out the suspense; the plot was pretty thin. The two romances outweighed the action by a lot. There was more emotion and lover's angst than western setting or story. Plus, I never care for the stories where there are two heroes, especially when one is written from first person perspective.

But, all that aside, there was plenty of what I love best about Zane Grey: the lost idealism, integrity, self-sacrifice, and honor that human beings naturally had at one time. I love the way it's considered wonderful, but normal, that one man would risk everything, including his life, to save the happiness of a friend. What a very different world from the one we've adapted to today!

Zane Grey seems to be a favorite author of almost everyone, and rightfully so. He weaves a very suspenseful plot with plenty of western action, yet feeds the heart of those who desire romance at the same time. An amazing author!
I am a very senior citizen, so it's been many, many years since I read any of Zane Grey's books. When I saw this listed at for my , my mind reversed, and I remembered I loved those books when I was a youngster. Now I am happy I did. The book is extremely well written, along the line of McMurtry. The descriptiveness of people, scenes and actions was worth the few hours I spent reading it. I'll go on soon reading some more Zane Gray novels and really enjoy them.
I love westerns and Zane Grey is a classic in the westerns of the last century. Anyone who likes western action with a little romance mixed in will like this book set in lawless western Texas in the time before law was established when outlaws were the law and no real crime went to court and good citizens were terrorized. The Texas Rangers were fighting for support. Can they succeed or will gang of rustlers drive them out of Pecos badlands.
The print in this book is so small it cannot be read for my 96 year old friend I bought it for. Saying it was large print was an outright lie. The print is tiny and the book cannot be used for the reason purchased. Zane Grey is a great writer but don't buy this for anyone that needs big print.
This novel was probably unfairly compared, coming after my favorite Zane Grey novel, "The Mysterious Rider." I'm sure it's good, classic Zane Grey, but a little different in its point of view (1st person) than his usual. I enjoyed it, just was coming off the wonderful previous novel, so it suffered by comparison. Still recommended for its western action, especially the last few chapters.
Typical Zane Grey western. The characters this time had a few that weren't all bad, or all good. The pace is steady as the plot develops. By current Lee Child standards this novel develops slower than some people will favor. I found "The Rustlers of Pecos County a delightfull change of pace.
To me, this is most unusual for a Zane Grey book. First, it seems to be about two main characters, rather than one. Both are Texas Rangers, Russ Sittell working undercover and the almost superhuman Vaughn Steele holding the attention of the the town of Linrock. Second Russ is the narrator of the book. Russ gets a job with the rancher Sampson, also town mayor, and is put in charge of watching out for his daughter and visiting cousin. Townspeople have written to the rangers to provide help due to the rustling and unsolved murders. The mayor and his right hand man Wright are believed to be the gang's leaders, but it is up to Russ to get the proof from the inside. Of course, every Zane Grey story has to have a romance and this book has two. Steele falls in love with Sampson's beautiful daughter, Diane, who is also the target of the rustler Wright. And Russ falls in love with the cousin, Sally. Romance makes the duties of the Rangers more difficult, but the makings for a good book.
